“That’s a definite possibility. It took me a minute or two to get through to you when I arrived. You could have been out right after the accident, then you’d have no idea if someone came in the truck and took them.”
“Do you really think someone would risk that?”
Noah shook his head. “Yeah. Hell, they risked running you off the road.”
Mason stopped moving and his stare was back on Noah. “Any chance I told you what was on those pages?”
“No. You only said to get them. But the more I think about it, the more I believe, whatever was on those papers would have had you coming to the same conclusion about that guy that we came up with today.”
“Dammit. I need to get to my office at the Bureau and see if I can find out what was on those papers.” Mason hit the side of his head. “I can’t believe my mind’s still messed up.”
“It’s all right,” Noah assured him. “We’ll get to your office and figure it out.”
“What? You’re not coming with me.”
Noah stepped in front of Mason. Into his personal space. “The hell I’m not. You’re not going alone.”
Mason stepped back. “I’m a grown man. I can take care of myself. Besides, I don’t want you getting hurt.”
Noah laughed. “And I’m a grown ex-SEAL. I’m coming.”
Mason turned toward the door. “Let’s go.” A sound of defeat washed through his voice.
“No.”
Mason swung around, and his stare bore into Noah. “What?”
Noah had no plans to argue about this. “We’re going in the morning. You need some rest. We’ll get up early and head in.”
“I’m not waiting.”
Keeping his voice calm, Noah said, “Tomorrow’s Saturday. We’ll have a better chance to have the place all to ourselves.”
“That makes sense, but I don’t want to put it off any longer. What if what I had is gone? And I never remember what the hell it was?”
“Take it as it comes. Right now, we focus on getting you better. Tomorrow’s for figuring everything else out.”
Noah walked out of the room, holding on to Mason’s shoulders, directing him toward the bedroom. “If I’m going to bed, you’re coming with me.”
Noah laughed at the sound of Mason’s pouting. “That’s not a good idea. You need your rest.” Regardless of what Noah said, his dick had other ideas.
Mason reached back and grabbed Noah’s jeans-covered cock. Unable to hide his reaction, Noah leaned over and moaned into Mason’s ear, his teeth taking hold of Mason’s lobe.
“I’m thinking you coming is a good idea. Whether in my bed, or right here.”
Mason’s words had fire racing through Noah’s body. Noah had to fight the urge to throw him up against the wall and take him right there. Grateful Mason had given up on going out, now Noah had other things to worry about.
Mason turned, meeting Noah’s mouth, forcing him to open wide and accept Mason’s tongue. Then Mason moved his hand up, gripped Noah’s head, and dug his tongue in deeper.
Noah’s body burned like an inferno, his need to do the right thing losing ground fast. When he tried to pull his head back, Mason tightened his grip in Noah’s hair, holding him in place. The kiss was rough, tongue and teeth doing battle, Noah willingly losing.
When Mason pulled off, Noah stayed unmoving, light-headed and lost in the moment. Mason’s rushed breath floated across Noah’s face. Noah’s hand lowered to his hardened organ and pressed down on it, trying to keep it under control.
Mason’s body fell into Noah’s, and Noah wrapped his arms around him, pulling him in closer. Their heartbeats pounded in unison.
“Let’s get you to bed.” Noah tried to hang tough.
“You’re coming?” Mason wouldn’t move.
“Yeah. Just for a bit.”
Mason let go of Noah, took his hand, and led him to the bedroom. The smile on Mason’s face had him appearing rather smug. Noah had plans to change that expression.
Mason flipped the light switch on, and Noah switched it off.
“Why’d you do that?” Mason frowned.
“You need your sleep.”
Mason stopped walking, turning his head to peer at Noah. “You’re really just putting me to bed?”
“Yes.” Noah loved when Mason squirmed, especially when it was for sexual reasons.
“Oh.” Mason let his hand drop from Noah’s, walked over to the bed, and jumped on.
Noah stared at him while Mason tucked himself in. Finished, Mason peered up, his eyes sad as he frowned. “Good night.”
When Noah didn’t move right away, Mason’s eyes opened wide. “What?”
“I said I was putting you to bed. Didn’t say I wouldn’t stay and maybe help put you to sleep.”
“No, you didn’t.” Mason was hesitant. “So, what exactly does that mean?”
“Means maybe I’ll help you fall asleep.” Noah crawled up on the bed and pulled the comforter off Mason. Then he leaned over and pulled off Mason’s pants. Mason’s cock, clothed in a pair of boxer briefs, peeked out the top, and Noah’s mouth watered. Noah’s gaze locked on Mason’s twitching cock. It was almost as if it begged. Not one to say no, Noah was on him in a second. Noah leaned over and licked the protruding tip as Mason’s hips pushed off the bed.
“Oh please.” Mason’s voice was already rough, and hearing him like that had Noah’s cock fighting for attention. It’d have to wait. Noah had something else he needed to take care of first.
Noah pulled off Mason’s boxer briefs and threw them to the ground. If Noah had his way, Mason would remain naked in bed for the rest of the night, not needing them again until morning.
Mason’s cock stretched toward his navel, its need evident in its bright red color and bulging state. Not wasting any more time, Noah took the hardened flesh all the way in his mouth and swallowed. Again, Mason pushed off the bed, screaming out Noah’s name, his hands reaching into Noah’s hair. Noah took his time. He slid his lips to the tip and sucked on it as his tongue pushed into the slit. Mason’s taste exploded on Noah’s tongue, and the need for more overwhelmed him. He swallowed Mason’s cock back down, humming all the way. The action had Mason again crying out. Noah fought himself not to drag this out—Mason needed his sleep. Noah moved his lips to the tip, sucking as he did, then let them slowly cover the organ, to the point he could swallow it. He performed the move three more times and had Mason’s body going stiff as hot liquid shot down Noah’s throat.

Mason glanced at the clock. It was 06:00 A.M. He’d slept for over twelve hours. Guess he’d really needed his sleep. His gaze moved next to him, to a still sleeping Noah. The blanket lay tangled in his legs, his naked chest giving Mason a beautiful view. Without thinking, Mason moved his hands to Noah, brushing across his abs. Noah’s slight movement had Mason pulling back his hand. He wanted some time to think before Noah woke up.
The time spent in his head did no good. As much as he tried, he couldn’t remember. What were the papers he had asked Noah to get? At least he’d remembered the car, so Noah hadn’t thought he was completely crazy.
Giving up, he rolled over and slid his arms around Noah, pulling him in tight. The other man moaned, telling Mason he was ready to wake.
A few strategically placed kisses had Noah opening his eyes and a smile forming on his face. “Good morning, babe. How are you feeling?”
“Anxious. And ready to go.”
“We will.” Noah rolled in and kissed Mason. “But first you need to eat.”
Mason, about to protest, changed his mind when he saw Noah’s eyebrows draw together. Deciding to pick his battles, Mason stood and followed Noah into the kitchen.
Within an hour and a half, they pulled into the Bureau’s parking garage. A few cars sat scattered through the parking lot. They drove around for a minute to check and see if they could find the one that had driven Mason off the road.
“It’s not here,” Mason said as Noah passed the same
spot for the third time.
“Okay. Where’s the best spot to park? And don’t worry about anyone recognizing this car.”
“I forgot we’re not in my truck.” Mason pointed. “I think pull around back here. We’re close enough to the main entrance to get in, and if we’re in a rush, we’re near some other ways to get out.”
“Sounds good.” Noah pulled in a parking spot. As he shut off the car, he turned to Mason. “You sure you’re up for this?”
“Yeah.” Like Mason had a choice. “What’s the alternative?”
“We come back tomorrow. Give your healing one more day.”
“No way.” Mason didn’t want to fight this fight again. “I’ve only got two days—one and a half—as it is.”
“That’s bullshit. If you talk to your higher-ups about the accident, and how you think it’s related to the case, they’ll—”
“Call me insane. They already think I’m obsessing over the case. You think they’d be okay with me adding I think someone is after me now?”
“Okay. Maybe not. But if you’re really not up for—”
“Stop.” Mason put his hand on Noah’s shoulder. “Now let’s get this done.” Mason continued to watch as Noah released his white knuckled grip on the steering wheel.
“Okay. So how is this going to work?” Noah stared at Mason.
“You sit in the car and wait for me.”
Noah didn’t even smile. “Not a chance. Next plan.”
Chills raced over Mason’s body. “We walk in the front. I show my ID, you sign in as my guest.”
“No one will care that you’re here?” Noah frowned. It was obvious he wasn’t convinced this was the best idea. “They won’t see that you signed in?”
“Hopefully not. And if they do, I’m praying it’ll be after I crack this case.”
Noah shook his head. “Okay, then let’s go.”
Both men stepped out of the car. Neither said anything as they walked. Mason opened the front door and held it for Noah. When Mason spotted the guard at the front desk, he let out a sigh of relief. There stood the new guy from the other day. It took Mason a second to realize the recognition was another memory coming back. He’d definitely come into the office, because he remembered the guy.
“Hey, how you doing?” Mason smiled.
“Good. Thanks. Slow day today.” The guard seemed relaxed, as if he didn’t expect anything to be up. Perfect.
“We’re heading up to the fifth floor. Just need to sign him in as my guest.”
“Sure, no problem.” The guard moved the paper in front of Noah, then after he finished signing, moved it over for Mason to sign.
“Thanks, man. Have a great day.” Mason moved toward the elevators, Noah on his heels.
Once in the elevator, Noah peered at Mason. Mason moved his head slightly, indicating to Noah not to say anything yet. There was a good chance the elevators had recorders in them, and because of that fear, Mason never discussed anything important while riding on them. Although he’d ridden it many times where other teams had opened up about all types of private shit, it wasn’t Mason’s thing.
When the elevator doors opened, Noah stepped out and waited for Mason to lead the way. Mason weaved through the offices and cubbies, still not wanting to say anything until they reached his office. Once inside, Mason took another deep breath. The hair on the back of his neck stood on edge. His intuition said they’d run into one of his superiors when they came to the office, and he couldn’t let the feeling go, even though they’d made it so far undetected.
Mason glanced over his shoulder at Noah. The other man said nothing, waiting for Mason’s cue.
“Sorry I’m all cloak-and-dagger. I still don’t trust this place isn’t bugged.”
“What about your office?” Noah asked.
“Right now, I don’t know. I’ve checked in the past, and it’s been clear. Besides, we need someplace we can talk, and I think this is our best bet.”
“Okay. So what do we do now?”
Mason examined his office. His files would need to be his first stop. Mason opened the first drawer, and Noah saw what he suspected was Mason’s computer.
“Fuck. I must have left this here. It doesn’t make sense though.” Mason put it down on his desk and pressed the button to power it up. “I’ll look through my files and see if I can see anything that triggers my memory.” As Mason put the key into the file cabinet against the back wall, Noah moved closer to him. Mason pulled the drawer open and froze.
Noah must have sensed something was up. “What’s the matter?”
“It’s empty. There’s nothing here.”
“You think those were the papers you took? The ones missing from the car?”
“No way.” Mason’s mind went wild. “There were old files in here. Not just from this last case. There is no way I would have taken them all. Someone else must have been in here since I’ve been gone.”
* * * *
“Who and why? What would they have wanted with your old files? You were reprimanded for this latest case, right? Not all your cases.”
“That’s what they told me.” As Mason spoke, he continued opening the other drawers. They were all the same, empty. “Fuck.” Mason turned around and went to his computer, his fingers whizzing over the keys.
Something was wrong. Mason’s expression turned dire. “What the fuck is going on?” The words were barely out of his mouth when he froze.
Concern racked Noah. “Mason, what is it?”
Mason held up one finger. Noah waited patiently for Mason, whose eyes squeezed shut, body tensing.
Noah could tell Mason’s brain traveled a mile a minute. Noah felt ready to jump out of his skin. Was Mason in pain? Was it from the accident? About to ask, Mason opened his eyes.
“I remember.”
It took Noah a second to understand what Mason’s words meant. Before Noah had a chance to say something, Mason continued. “I’m locked out of all the files from the case. I had to go to the executive conference room to gain access. Those were the papers I had in my car.”
“Why would they lock you out of your own files? Even if they redirected the case, it doesn’t make sense.” Noah’s concern continued to spike.
“That’s exactly what I thought, and the reason I had to see why.”
All right. “So what do we do now?” Noah’s skin prickled.
“I go back and get the files.” Mason was already standing up.
“Was there anything on them that will help? Did you get a chance to read them?” Noah couldn’t wait to hear.
“No. I planned to come back to my office and take a look, but someone else was here, and I thought it best to get the hell out and go over them at home.”
“So, we definitely need to get to the conference room.” Noah’s gut twitched. He had a feeling about what Mason would say next.
“Not we. You’re staying here. It’s bad enough I need to sneak in there.”
Noah knew it. “What do I do? Sit and wait?”
“Pretty much.” Mason dug through his desk drawer. “I don’t feel good about being here.” Mason’s movements were tense. “Need a memory stick, I’m not wasting time printing everything out. That was the mistake I made last time, not bringing the damn thing and having to pray to the heavens no one overheard the hum of the printer.” It was obvious, even though the building seemed empty, Mason was concerned with being caught.
When Mason found what he was looking for, he went to leave the room. At the last second, he turned around and grabbed his laptop. “I’ll make sure I get all the files on this thing before leaving. Don’t want to have to head back here a third time.”
“Good idea.” Everything inside Noah told him to not let Mason go by himself, but Noah held his ground, knowing it’d cause Mason more stress if Noah pushed.
“If anyone shows up, tell them I ran to the third floor, and I’ll be right back.”
“What’s on the third floor?” Noah asked.
“Archives. Anyone knowing my files are gone would assume I’m investigating why. The area is secure, no one in or out without the guard’s approval, and she definitely isn’t in this early on a Saturday, so everything will be locked down.”
“What if someone goes to check on you?”
“By the time they go down and come back, I’ll be done.”
Noah knew Mason left off the hopefully on purpose. Adrenaline pumped through Noah. He was ready to deal with a hard time waiting.
Before Mason had a chance to head out of the room, Noah grabbed him, pulling him into his arms. His lips next to Mason’s ear he breathed in. “Be careful. There’s a good chance someone is after you, and if it’s because of this case, you’re outside the wire.”
“I’ll be fine. Promise. I’ll be back before you even realize I’m gone.”
Mason left the room, and Noah watched as he disappeared through the maze of cubicles.
Noah paced the room; for how long, he didn’t know. He should have insisted he go with Mason, this waiting was for shit. He tried to get his mind on something other than the thought of Mason getting caught. He focused instead on the case, figuring out what the hell the lockdown on Mason’s files meant.
He was facing the filing cabinet, his back to the door, sitting with his head back in Mason’s seat when the door opened.
“Hey—”
“Mason, why am I not surprised to see you here today?”
Fuck, it wasn’t Mason. Noah froze mid-step, his foot pressed to the floor, readying to swing the chair around.
Taking a deep breath, Noah calmed himself, going over in his head the story Mason told him to give. Noah turned the chair, starting to stand; then he fell back, as ice raced through his veins.
Chapter 31
It wasn’t the gun pointed right at Noah that had him ready to explode; it was the man holding the gun. It was as if Noah was staring at a ghost, and from the man’s raised eyebrows, his pale complexion, and the shudder that racked his body, it was obvious he was having the same reaction. Words couldn’t escape Noah, instead Noah’s brain raced with what the hell was going on. Was he being punked? How was it even possible that the guy who caused Noah to leave the SEALs was standing in front of him?
